Setting the scene

This all started because I couldn't speak French fluently enough (at that time).  A year or more ago I was telling a french speaking friend how I had just missed out on what I thought was the best job with a specification written just for me. "We are interested in your skills, but unfortunately we have nothing for you at the moment."  "We are looking for a French speaker."  This was the gist of an email I recieved some months after I had submitted a spirited cv and application for a position as an adviser to police and security services with an international humanitarian organisation.
My friend made a comment that another branch of this organisation employed people with those skills too.  The comment stuck in my head and soon enquiring emails were flying back and forth around the globe.  There followed a period of more or less patiently waiting and eventually, with a little encouragement, the planets started to align themselves.
A vacancy had become available and was duly advertised on the firm's website.  The pixels had hardly aligned themselves on my computer screen before I had submitted my cv.....more waiting followed.....
